Monthly skating review: progress and goals adjustment

Just as I was saying in the previous post, last month I was so busy, there was  no time or energy for skating. That is except last week... I was so exhausted that I took a day off work and I got to go skating.

I went to my home rink on a 1.5 hours session. I had the time to re-lace the boots and play with the blade alignment. One of my friends/ occasional instructor was skating too. He approached me to compliment on my improvement! I was surprised... At this point I haven't skated for 2 months... and I haven't really trained the last 2 years... But my friend said I look confident and down in my knees. Well, it was such a needed bust of positivity! Then I got to skate once more last week. It was still good skating, only I developed a blister.

I still have struggles to overcome. Firstly I need to have the blade professionally aligned. The screws need to be moved, so new hole drilled, old holes covered. I cannot do that myself and I would be afraid to decide on my own where to put the new screws. It's long story, maybe I'll have time to write a separate post while the boot alignment happens, so I'll have a record of all the accumulated knowledge. I've decided to go to my old bootfitter/ sharpener, not the one that helped with the custom boots, because he is closer and less busy. I think they are equally capable. He has a $90 fee for coming for an hour on ice and adjust the blade on the spot.

I still have to build the skating muscles.

Mostly, I have to figure out a skating schedule. Honestly, this is mostly a life balancing problem, so yeah... I need to figure that out.

Monthly skating review: progress and goals adjustment

My work was very demanding lately and instead of being able to increase my skating time... I went the opposite way. I was actually so stretched for time, tired and stressed that I felt on the verge of getting sick for the whole month. So I found myself forced to prioritize resting and let the skating slide. While skating gives me positive energy (because I love it), and keeps my body healthy, it is also physically and time demanding.

This month I'll have to travel twice, one time for a whole week. The plan is to stay healthy. I will not push the skating. I'll go if I can, if not I hope I'll find a little time for some basic exercises.

Monthly skating review: progress and goals adjustment

My goals for last month were to finalize the boots adjustments, to work my muscles, and to watch my schedule to see how much time I can allocate to skating.

The biggest problem at hand is that I'm getting very tired after skating...and this is while skating for just half hour. I do remember going through this in the past, while building muscles and stamina. In the past, I really really wanted progress, and I pushed myself hard and... it wasn't pleasant. I remember I had to make changes in eating, hydrating more, wear warmer clothing, but mostly needing more rest, napping after an intense skating session.  Now, I have a very busy life schedule, I have no time for naps, I have no choice but to take it easy.

I managed to skate twice per week. Well, except, I didn't skate at all one week because I pulled (stretched) my back. Nothing serious, but I was afraid that the pain will make me unsteady on ice.

Then, I was hoping that it wouldn't be the case, but I had to renegotiate the flexibility of my schedule at work. I made it clear when I started working there, that I'll go out the lunch hour and I also asked for flexible hours. But, as I didn't have reliable skating boots, I didn't go skating much, and when I started to go regularly I was worried it was going to be noticed. So I tried to be away from work for no more than an hour, that giving me just half hour of skating. But my lunch hour skating was noticed, and I was told straight up that... "they won't pay me to skate". I don't actually think it was ill meant. This is a family owned business and the boundaries are not well defined. There was a similar situation with other employees and the resolution was to not have the lunch hour paid but to have a raise for the time worked. I actually like this, because it normalizes that I can leave for more than one hour.

I wasn't able to adjust the blades. I need more than half hour of skating to be able to take off the boots to move the blades. I did try some slight modification when I came off ice, and I haven't seem to got it yet. It may be that the screws need to be actually moved, because I'm not getting a solid outside edge. But it also can be that I need the boots to break in a little more so I can tight them stronger, I feel I have a little space and my foot may be actually moving and pulling me towards inside.

But for now, I actually enjoy skating even with the blades like this. Plus I'm building the muscles... I feel if I would have the blade properly aligned I would exert myself more. Better take it easy for now, and enjoy the glide. As I know myself, as soon as I'll have the blades aligned, I will not be able to not get into the frustrating "skating for progress" mode...

My goals for this month are to continue working on my muscles and stamina and hopefully have the blades aligned. For now, I won't worry about my busy life schedule and increasing the skating time, it seems that what I'm able to skate now is anyway all I'm able to physically handle... Depending how I feel, and the schedule, I may try some weeks to skate 3 times a week. And in order to try to adjust the blade I have to skate some longer sessions than half hour.

Monthly skating review: progress and goals adjustment

Now that I have boots! and my regular Monday to Friday noon/ lunch break ice starts this week, I feel antsy to look ahead. Well, the boots still need adjustments and this week the rink is closed on Monday for Labor day and I cannot skate on Friday so this week is a tease, but for the rest of the month the prognosis for the skating conditions looks good.

I think this month I want to gently and realistically asses where I'm at and where could I go.

After 2 years without proper boots, firstly, I'm 2 years older, getting close to the big 50. I think I'll have to accept that my physical abilities will slowly decline, and has declined already. Also, I fell my schedule has changed, I had to shift the focus that I had on skating into other activities. I suspect, it will be difficult to commit to skating the same amount of time I committed before. And there is that desire to progress... but is it realistic to expect progress? And if I wouldn't expect much progress, will I find motivation to put hard work in? If not, I will have to set my expectations on skating for pleasure.

My goals for this month are to finalize the boots adjustments, to work my muscles, and to watch my schedule to see how much time I can allocate to skating.

Breaking in the Bronze Stars week 3 and 4

The last 2 weeks, I was able to skate just 3 days, I lately skated on Monday and Fridays, and 2 weeks ago Friday, I couldn't make it. But last week I took Monday off from work and I went to my old rink for an 1.5 hour session. Those sessions are so great, I can run all the drills I want and still have some time to spare, like talking to skating friends, or in this case, playing with the blade placement.

The progress I can report is that I've replaced the half insoles placed underneath my surefeet insoles, meant to fill in the toe box that is too high and I suspected made me cramp, with full size insoles. Cramping stopped and this change also improved my balance! My backward skating felt quite good!

I've made no progress with the blade alignment. I feel I need the blade more "in" but it is already "in". But, as I said, I feel comfortable going backwards, so the adjustment I need is for going forward, so on the back of the blade?

Meanwhile I feel I'm still breaking in the boots so all this time is not wasted.

Breaking in the Bronze Stars week 2

The rink where I usually skate during my lunch breaks is closed up to Labor day to remake the ice.  There is another rink close bye but it is focused heavily on hockey. I did try to go there once and the hockey players were late to get off ice for 15 minutes. Then it should have been 15 minutes zamboni time, so 30 minutes... well that's all the time I have to skate.

But desperate times... I found ice at 3pm Monday and Friday, and I actually was able to go both days.

I continued with the approach from last week to just skate and enjoy. While the boots break in, I need to figure out if I need to punch out my left boot and figure out where I want the blade moved. I was doing stroking, edges, edge presses, circles, chasses, swing rolls, cross rolls, crossovers, 3 turns, all forward and backward.

I had the exact same feel as last week. Before going back to the bootfitter to adjust the blade and to eventually punch out the left toe, I have first to figure out why I'm cramping... on both feet. The left boot I know it is slightly shorter, but the right boot fits. The bootfitter added half insoles in the front of the boot to compensate for the high toe box that is the new design of Riedell.  I'm more and more sure I cramp because of those. I also feel my balance off, when going backward, and I feel my shins muscles working too hard when I skate forward. I tried to take them out but then the boots feel too large. I want to try full lenght insoles, but I couldn't find in stores, even on Amazon they have almost 2 weeks delivery time.

But, besides cramping and the blade not being perfectly aligned and of course the high to box, I feel I'm in the best boot scenario I was in the last two years.

No ice!

Well... I knew, but as I haven't skating regularly, I forgot. The rink where I usually skate, is closing for a whole month to remake the ice. This rink is 12 minute away from my work, so I can fit half of hour of skating in my lunch break. There is no other similar option...

I am very busy at work, it is very difficult to take time off. I also have this weekend and next two weekends scheduled already...

I don't know how, but I'll have to find some time to go skating so I figure out the punching and where I need the blade moved.

Breaking in the Bronze Stars week 1

Wednesday:

On the fist steps on ice I was very aware that the left boot is shorter, but it wasn't hurting, so I tried to ignore it. The blade is definitely not aligned well, I cannot get quickly on an outside edge on the left foot. The good news is that the right foot (the bad foot in the past) gets on the outside edge quite well. The high toe box is annoying in the sense that after each push the tongue has space to lower and hit my toes. It is annoying but not hurting. I will see only later if this extra space will affect the back turns. Overall I skated just around 15 minutes, I spent some time readjusting the blade

Thursday:

I knew from the day before that I cannot move the blade more towards where I feel I need it, without moving the screws, and that I won't do myself. So, in preparation to my next trip to the bootfitter, I basically have to decide if I needed punching out the left toe. So I decided to skate freely, push into the ankles to break in the boots, and forget the alignment for now. I just wanted to see if the left big toe is gonna hurt. The takeout from this session is how much I missed skating! Even with the blades not aligned I could go fast and have some control. At the end of the session my feet were cramping, so I may need punching after all, but on both boots? The right boot I feel fits well.  I'll figure it out next week!

Riedel Bronze Star fitting appoinment

OK! Bootfitting appointment. The fist thing I did, I showed the bootfitter the right boot of the custom Riedell that they say it is a size 5, size by side with this new Riedell Bronze star size 5. Guess what? The custom boot is visible bigger, both lenght and volume. We discussed shortly what to do with the custom boots but didn't want to waste time. They will have to be returned but do I want the money back or do I want other boots? The bootfitter said to maybe see how the new ones work.

He agreed that there is a good change these Bronze Stars will work. They were heated and they molded after my foot beautifully! Even when still worm, so soft, I felt supported. It is so clear now, through comparison, how the custom ones didn't support me at the arch, they were too big...

Going back to the Bronze Stars. Do I need punching out of the toe for my bigger foot? I'm not sure... I feel the toe touching but I don't hurt. I do feel my toes rising in the toe box... The botfitter added some padding under the toes and mounted the blades. I had just few minutes on ice as a hockey session was starting. I'm quite sure the blade will need adjustment, but I wasn't sure by how much. I will have to come back soon after I decide if I need punching, then we can adjust the blade too.

Desperate ebay buying

So... Being that I've spent now thousands and thousands and I still have no boots, what are few more hundreds? From two years ago, when I've realized that no new Riedell model boot fits like my old Redell 220 that is not produced anymore, AND Riedell changed he shape of the toe box and all their models feel too big, I keep looking on internet for an old 220, well hopefully new, or slightly worn. I found like a year ago something almost new that seamed that shape (they couldn't read the model), and it was same shape, just a lower level model, cut a little lower, so no good, because it didn't offer me enough support. They I found, again, almost new, a 220 but half size smaller, so I haven't bought it. Still I kept looking.

I found somebody local selling on ebay new Riedell with small factory defects, kind of half price. Plus he accepted returns, of course if the boot was not mounted. More than that, he accepted for me to pick up, so basically to try. I was hoping he might have older models, where the toe box was not changed yet. Well, he didn't, but what he had, was lots of advice... He turned out to be a retired bootfitter, having time on  Sunday afternoon to share his experience. He described me the manufacturing process and said that in his opinion custom has 50-50 chance to work out, as they are not as precise as one would expect. Well.. that is not good...

Anyway, as we looked to the boots we've realized the higher level ones had a deeper front cut, so the lacing starting more towards the front of the boot. That should help a little to tame that higher toe box. Up to this point I was keeping my interest into the high intermediate boots, as advised by all bootfitters, as my old boots had supposedly a flex of 50. So up to now I've tried the models Stride, 50 flex, Flair and Motion, both 70 flex.  Now, I've tried a Bronze star, flex 80. It felt stiff, but it also felt huge.. like lenght and volume. We've looked at my old boots, and he agreed that this new raised toe box is inserted into the lace differently, so it creates some extra lenght. Unfortunately he didn't have the next half size smaller at his place, he said he brought just the size I wanted 5.5. He also said that in 5 he only has a wide boot for this model.

Well, I found a size 5 Bronze Star from another seller and bought it. He accepts returns, so if they feel totally wrong, I'll send them back, I would loose the shipping back and forth.

So... My left foot is measured on Riedell chart at 5.5 and the right foot at 5. It is my estimation that, few years ago,  when Riedell made the toe box higher it made the size feel longer by quarter of a size. And yeap, this is how these Bronze star size 5 feel... The right one is just slightly longer, and the left one slightly shorter. It also becomes clear that when the toe box was raised, the boot volume was raised, they feel half a size larger overall. These new boots, Riedell 5, feel in volume as my old Ryedell 5.5.

I'm sooo sooo mad at Riedell for not knowing their own sizing and messing the custom boots so badly, and wasting a skating whole year of my life

But, I hope these Bronze Star stock boots will work. I don't expect them to be perfect. The toe box is still too high, that was my complain with the Riedell new boots fitting in the first place.

I have bootfitter appointment tomorrow.

Custom boots huge failure

So the custom boots were punched out in the back of the heel cup. They do not hurt, but... I have no heel cup anymore. They lift out of my foot at every single push like they would be flip flops... Also, while not hurting, the left boot bump is still there and it still leave a mark in my bone as I take the boots out.

I skated a second time, same... there is no hope for these boots. I called my bootfiter crying...

When I first visited him around a year and a half ago... yes it is this long ago, he said that either I order custom that will fit, or I accept a stock boot modified to fit to some extent...

I wanted custom, well, now I said let's get a stock boot and continue working on custom. But what stock boot?

Custom boots reworke - new trip to the bootfiter

I called the my botfitter shop to see if there is any news for when he'll come back to work after having covid. His partner said they take appointments for the folowwing week. I expected for him to send the custom boots back for hopefully repairs. That would take, in my experience a couple of months. But what if they cannot be repaired? Will they make new ones

BUT! The bootfitter was able to punch the back of the custom boots! I tried them on ice for just few minutes as they were heated for the punching and it is not safe to skate in them. They seem fine!

Breaking in the boots: week 3

I don't usually go skating in weekends, I find it crowded and expensive. But...I decided to wear the boots in the house during this 4th of July long weekend, as that helps the break in quite a lot. And... after like 15 minutes... intense heel pain :(  I took the boots off and I looked at my heel and it had some deep dimples where I was feeling the boot hurting. I checked the boot and it has some kind of ridges/ wrinkles at the heel, not the lining, but inside. It seems that as they modified the boot they modified the back seem too as before I was complaining it was pushing me forward. Very nice of them, but it messed up the back seam, or the heel cup, or something... I'm sure you can imagine my level of frustration, disappointment... I was looking around the house for a tool to push in those spots, I think the pestle from my stainless steel mortar and pestle would work, but I couldn't find it. I ended up pushing with my fingers, obviously without much result. I will add for the sake of being precise, that the inside of the left heel cup is stained, I thought maybe the glue sipped through, but luckily it is not stiff, I don't know what it is.

I decided to go to the bootfiter. I wrote an e-mail on Sunday asking for a 1 minute appointment just for him to see this.... This bootfitter works only 3 half days per week Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning, and only by appointment. Whenever I needed his help for these boot fitting it took 2 weeks to get to see him. He is an hour away from me, I don't usually go to him for sharpening or easy things, but I trust his experience the best in boot fitting. I called Tuesday as he hasn't answered my e-mail. His apprentice answered that the main bootfiter has covid, and he is there disinfecting and they won't take appointments for this week, at least. Also the bootfitter was feeling quite bad so obviously they didn't know when he is gonna be back at work... I sent him my best and well... my boots will have to wait.

It's just that there is always something that's delaying my skating... boots sent without tracking number (twice) so  I couldn't make an appointment ahead of their arrival.,  two snowstorms because of which my appointments got canceled, I was measured wrong... twice... defects...

I decided to call the factory. I need to get this done. I think the boots have to be sent to the factory for them to open that heel and clean it, I hope there would be a local way to do it but I don't see it. That means the blades that are now close to final position will have to be taken out. I'll have to make signs where the blade was. Will they have to fill the screw holes? Will this affect the future screwing of a new blade? It did on my old boots... So many questions, and I'm looking back... everybody says trust the bootfiter, but they all say oh give it a chance, that is not a problem, I can fix that... and than they don't, and literary say the opposite thing.

Well, guess what. The factory is closed this week!

I feel the need to start a new side label "deep frustration" or "desperation".

Breaking it the custom boots: 2nd week

 Monday:

- the heel pain was actually a little better, still unbearable, but I think I can hope it will go away as the heel cup will relax.

- the toe blister starts to heal.

- the boots start to close in and hug my foot so I felt more control and it got more clear how I want the blade. I'll explain my process of blade aligning for my pronation, in detail, in a separate post.

- the ankle still needs softening, because if you remember I ended up not heat molding for fear of not collapsing the boot.

- the heel still lifts up.

Wednesday:

- kind of same pain in the heel. It's maybe a little better? May also be wishful thinking.

- the ankle starts softening and I'm getting more control. I said I will explain how I adjust the blade and I'll just say that it is a long process involving wedges under the blade and I fell I can do it only after the boot starts to break in. I feel I'm almost there.

- my worry is the heel lifting after each push, when I point the toes. I don't know how that will affect my skating when I will be able to go at my full speed and quickens. For now it is a feeling extremely annoying, like I would wear flip flops and they would be too big and they would slide. This heel lifting supposedly happens because my surefeet inserts have high heel and they lift my heel out of the heel pocket. Another mistake in the design of the boots... especially because the "custom" insoles they did for me are even higher.

- to add to this worry is the fact that I measured the outside heel. It is as my last boots, but the rest of the sole is thicker, as I added cork... so the proportion is off, now the heel is lower than on my previous boots. If you don't remember from my past posts, I will remind you, when I first got the boots the heel was higher.

I planned to go skating once more this week, but all this physical pain and the emotional pain of figuring out the boots process it is so draining, I just couldn't drag myself....

Breaking it the custom boots: 1st week

 1st day:

-Intense pain into/ under the heels, but I'm still hoping the  boot heel cup will relax. I have an idea it could be the outside heel that was modified to be lower, and may affect the shape of the sole so the insole, but I'm not gonna entertain that idea until few more skating days

-The blister on my right big toe sensitive was very sensitive.

-I need to move the blade left back  slightly towards inside.

-Not much breaking in at the ankle yet.

-Heel raising... supposedly the insole gets my foot out of the heel cup. That is a bummer and no solution in sight, only to give up on the insoles, but I need that arch support. I don't know how that will impact my skating,

2nd day:

-it didn't happen, that shows perfectly that my enthusiasm is low.

Hope level that these boots will work... I would say 50/50 I just don't know

Custom boots reworked - 3rd trip to the bootsfitter

The boots were heated and clamped to be made more narrow at the back of the arch. I could see the clamps marks (not scratches, just dimples)

They did feel tighter. They hurt around/ under the heel a little more maybe? But I know, and the bootfitter confirmed, that the heel cup will relax. So I checked again the blade alignment just to be sure the screws don't need to be physically moved, and they did actually, then I left with the plan of breaking them in and fine tuning the blade alignment myself.

Stay tuned...

Custom boots reworked - 2nd trip to bootfitter

The main goal of this trip was for the bootfitter to try to straighten the "wall" of the boots, to go up around the arch, because they were very wide there, and my foot collapsed there.

They seemed better. We also put in my new superfeet insoles.

I went on ice to try to feel the blade alignment. After punching, I had more space for the tongue, that was better, the blister was reasonable but it was not healed so there was pain that I had to ignore. The soles of my feet hurt. I've realized we didn't warm up the super feet insoles, so they must poke. Worrisome... I couldn't hold the forward outside edges...

I went several times on ice after the bootftter adjusted the blade. But it almost felt worst? The boot collapsed again from the heat of my feet... I kept insisting that must be  way to straighten. The bootfitter said he would try to clamp them.

My hope level: close to desperation...

Monthly skating review: progress and goals adjustment

Last month I was skating regularly on my old boots. I cannot do much. And eventually I did get very frustrated. I also took some falls when I allowed myself to go faster. The blades just slips from underneath me. But... I don't feel I lost my skills. I feel like a intermediary skater.

AND... I missed it so badly. I hope the reworked boots will work. I think figuring out some supportive boots is the biggest problem of my life at this point. Skating makes me happy, period! But it is also the only exercising I can make myself do regularly.  So when I'm not skating I'm not doing well physicly and mentally/emotionally.

Well... the fall to spring ice is coming to an end this wekend. In the summer the ice I can find is sparse and at inconsistent schedule. But summer will pass and I'll have ice in couple of months. Will I have new/ working boots?

Tuesday, May 31, 2022

Will these reworked custom boots work?

So I've got back the boots. They went to the bootfitter, and again, I haven't been provided a tracking number by Riedell. The bootfitter works just 3 days per week, I don't know when he got the boots, I'm sure he would have called eventually, I just had a feeling that they may have arrived, and I got to him first. I got appointment for next week. He will prepare the soles to be water proof and mount the blades on the temporary slots.

So, at the bootfitter appointment, the boots were warmed in the special oven and I put the old superfeet insoles in. The check list:

-Good news, they fit in lenght, the left leg is only very slightly too long.

-Pain under my right heel. I put in the custom Riedell insoles because I forgot my new superfeet insoles home and I didn't want to cut the old ones that fit perfectly in my old boots. I think is from the insole.

-The heel keeps popping up. The bootfitter thinks the raised heel of the insole (that adjust pronation) makes my heel pop up from the boot heel pocket. So much for custom boots, that allowance should have been made for that height difference. I hope the superfit insoles will fit better.  I'm choosing to not think about it.

-The outside/ wood heel was changed. On the first try on these custom boots, they put a new style heel that was higher than my previous one, and I felt pushed forward.  I couldn't wait to get home to measure, I was betting in my head that now the proportion between the sole and outside heel height is too small. I didn't say anything about that.

-The worrisome thing is that I felt the right feet (the one that pronates) is falling badly towards inside. What I see in the boots is that they are narrow at toes and heel but very bulky/ open  in the arch area, and the foot collapses into that space. I took them off and we looked with the bootfitter and the right boot is visibly more open/ wide in the arch area than the left boot. The idea is that they will mold on my feet, but that means they will mold collapsed. The bootfitter said to leave them with him he'll warm them and straighten them.

- On ice, intense pain on shims from the tongue digging in. I felt the tongue shorter but we compared to the old boots, it is the same. It will need to break in at ankle so it will curve. Intense rubbing on my right big toe. As I took the boot off, the tongue is not set perfectly smooth. The bootfiter raised the toe slightly, and in time that eventually will go away, smooth itself.

- I went back on ice, we tried to adjust the blade, the blister burst and the shins and heels were hurting badly, and as the boots had to left there to be hopefully straighten, I chosen to stop and come back with fresh legs.

The bootfitter is very experienced and very kind and patient. I'm sure he will do all he can...

My hope level for these to work is "intense doubt".

Monthly skating review: progress and goals adjustment

You know my custom boots are being re worked...

I have the desire to skate but my old boots are collapsed and blade is not aligned, so I cannot hold edges at speed. I can co slower and forced those edged or I can go fast but straight. It is still something.

The MITF Adult Gold test requires double 3 turns and brackets. I can kind of do them. I'm telling myself I'm working at my body alignment awareness.

The custom boots nightmare - part 4

The answer from Riedell came quite quickly, they would refund my money or correct the lenght and height of toe, make the heel cup narrower and build the arch more to help for pronation if I wanted to, that's it...

I took some time to consider,  I also consulted with the bootfitter. In no particular order I was concerned with:

- the back lenght of the boot being shorter as those cut back designs hurt my achile's tendon in the past and also felt unstable. Though these boots are not so low, so... ok...

- the heel lifting up, that I don't know why and how would affect my skating. He said that that is very probable happening because of the boots being to0 long, so it's gonna be corrected implicitly.

- the back shape of the boot combined with the higher height of the wood heel that pushes my way balance forward. He said he can, himself, take a layer of the heel out...

Well, I thought, better than my old boots, and it is not that I have a better option.

I diligently wrote to Riedell that I want the first 3 modifications, not the 4th one, the arch build, leave that clean. I also offered to go back to the bootfitter, that is an hour away from me, to give any more feedback for the lenght, heel cup, because I didn't have the boots, they stayed with the boot fitter.

I said they can ship to me or to the bootfitter but please do send me the tracking number this time...

Monthly skating review: progress and goals adjustment

I haven't skated much in the winter months, just enough to keep in shape  waiting for the custom boots. Now, it's few months when I haven't skated at all while trying to figure out if the custom boots fit me.

But with all these trips to the bootfiter for the custom boots fitting, I've got a deep, strong feeling of needing to skate. It must be the smell of the ice, as this skating shop is inside a skating rink building.

I still have my old boots, I decided to go, do what I can, enjoy, don't let the muscles get lazy. I will never, ever, take off the blade from these  old boots...

The custom boots nightmare - part 3

Well... I was back to the bootfitter to figure out what Riedell told him they made, and what I've actually got.

We warmed the boots, he asked well? Well what? They are too long! He touched the toe, he obviously felt... he said it was also still too high (that was the reason I went custom in the first place... the height of the toe box)... though he can adjust that by placing something underneath my foot... I'm like for what... they are too long... see I shove my finger at the back of my foot and there is still plenty of space on the right foot and on the left "just" a finger.

He wanted to measure again... his face dropped. He measured again... He said he, and Riedell both measured wrongly... I'm 5 1/2 and 5 not 5 1/2 and 5 1/4. Well that's just 1/4 difference on one foot. My old boots are 5 1/2, these customs ones are bigger then those. He check the paper and said the custom seem to be 5 3/4 and 5 1/2. Like why? that is 1/4 more than initial measurement... and it is supposedly because they allow 1/4 extra for adults.... anyway I'm like noooope, the new right boot is not 5 1/2 like my old one, is a different 5 1/2... more like a 6...

I showed him lateral comparison between my old boots and new boots, the heel cup is coming out on the new ones, looks like extra space there... like a 1/4 size. As the boots were aligned on the table now, I also point at the height difference of the boot in the back, and the heel height and shape difference. And the back of the boot pitching forward. And the lining...

He took a form like the one I was measured on at the factory and basically took a new order. He measured me... again... yeap 5 1/2 and 5...

He said he'll talk to Riedell. I asked if he thinks they'll make new ones and hopefully make them faster... He said it's totally up to them.

The custom boots nightmare

So... I'm soo frustrated, I'll make the story as short as possible so I won't relive the nightmare.

The custom boots arrived and they are too big!  But let me just list all issues, without getting into details

- I called Riedell to see when will they arrived and they said they've sent them already. I asked when I've paid for them to be sure to e-mail the tracking number, but they didn't

- the tracking number I was provided when I called, listed the package as delivered... only I didn't get them... It was the middle of a snow storm and a weekend. I did finally got the boots after 4 days... and nights of course.

- as I opened the package I saw the lining was wrong, then the custom insoles were missing.

- I called back, they immediately got defensive about the lining, and tracking number that wasn't sent at first. They asked me to send pics with the insoles I've got... the flat, stock ones. They answered that they apologize and will send the custom inserts shortly with a tracking number, which they did. As for the lining, they said they checked the order and the initial choice was crossed out and a new one was added. Well, when did I approved that... oh, never! Did I also mention that I wasn't given a contract?

- but wait... the custom  insoles I've got were all wrong. I need arch support. These had none, these had adjustment for pronation, that I thought was gonna be done inside the boots. I called back, Riedell said that I have to go the bootfiter anyway, why don't we talk after he checks few things.

- meanwhile I tried the boots in the house, they felt slightly big???? also that insert adjusting for pronation hurt like hell... My old inserts were too small for the new boots. Yeap the boots are too big, especially the right one... But wait... they are shorter (in total height) than my old ones (that were supposed to be the model), the wood heel is higher and narrower, the back of the boot is angled more forward.... What the hell boots are these? Probably they mixed up my order?

- at the bootfitter, where I got after 2 weeks as he didn't have availability... He took me late, then we rushed. I said the inserts hurt, he said drop them, they are bad idea, use your old ones. Ok... then the promised custom adjustment for pronation is not gonna happen? Nope... Ok... I said the boots are too big... he said let me measure you and talk to Riedell. He said I'm 5 1/2 on left and 5 1/4 on right, what I knew and agreed. I pointed all the differences but he didn't really pay attention and said to let him talk to Riedell, to get from them what they actually did.

- we set an appointment for next week

Monthly update: Still waiting

I'm still waiting for my new custom boots I've ordered from Riedell. They were suppose to be done by end last year but I expected a delay. I've called and the said a couple more weeks.

I've also been slightly sick during holidays. Covid test was negative but I still decided to stay home as much as I could.

That is the long way to say that I haven't skated now, in a month or is it two?

Monthly skating review: progress and goals adjustment

Last month's skating was... hard. I guess the main reason is that my life is busy and it is hard to carve time for skating. It doesn'...
